CASEMAKING & EXPORT PACKING

For many years Lightwood have been involved in specialist packing,  all breakable goods have to be adequately secured prior to shipping and the degree of packing is commensurate with the value and risk as judged by the owner/shipper. Our experience ranges from collecting and case-packing Fine Art, including paintings, furniture, jewellery, china, glassware, porcelain, chandeliers, through to industrial supplies, aircraft spares, measuring instruments, machinery, headstones, architectural metalwork and so on.

Sometimes equipment is too big or delicate to move without first being cased and our team will carry out a site survey, build the necessary cases off-site, bring them in and build them up around the item. This can be a single machine or even a whole production line.

We were recently involved in moving a Morgue to the West Indies. Needless to say, there were a few spare parts!

With the current concerns regarding the environment, shippers should be aware that more and more countries are controlling the timber they will allow in. Softwood products need to be heat treated and certified because whole forests have been decimated by insects such as the Pine Nematode. Wooden pallets, timber crates, dunnage etc. all has to be treated and certified by an approved Timcon agent or risk rejection and return of cargo to the UK at shippers expense.

Lightwood can advise on the current situation and provde either the approved construction or for the fumigation necessary to comply with overseas import countries laws. The list of countries imposing import controls has grown dramatically since the UK, Canada, China and E.U. adopted the guidelines.

The key factors in the safe transit of export goods are:-

  • The way they are handled in depots

  • The way they are loaded and unloaded

  • The amount of transhipment they undergo

  • The treatment they receive during the journey - on vans/lorries/ships/planes

And, most importantly........the packing they are in.

None of the first items can be directly controlled by you, the customer.  Be sure that you check the freight company you use is a responsible one with decent equipment.  At the end of the day you are very much in the hands of others, including unknown overseas agents, warehouses, transport etc.

To minimise the risk of damage we can pack any shape and size of object with tried and tested case-making techniques and this, combined with modern inner packaging solutions - over 20 different packaging mediums from simple acid-free tissue for China and glassware to a liquid packaging foam system for delicate instruments, vacuum packing; heat sealing etc.

Wood Packaging

Your attention is drawn to the increasing number of countries worldwide who have, or are in the process of, adopting measures to prevent the spread of pests found in softwood timber. For instance, the Pine Nematode is responsible for destroying complete forests in some European countries. This pest can be carried in timber used for packing, dunnage and pallets and to prevent this and many other pests from spreading, only ISPM15 marked heat treated softwood is acceptable for entry into the countries listed below.

Lightwood Plc is a member of the UK Wood Marking Packaging Programme and authorised to use the FC mark indicating Heat Treated wood. Our registration number is FC0598. Consignments not bearing the mark are likely to be quarantined and fumigated at the sender’s expense or even destroyed.

Lightwood can cater for all your packing needs, including machinery collection and crating, wrapping and packing personal effects, furniture, pictures and antiques, together with shipment worldwide.
