Lightwood Logistics History

Lightwood is an independent Company formed by the three current Directors who are actively involved in the business on a daily basis and are readily available to talk to customers and suppliers. Having worked together on a number of occasions the three decided in 1997 to join together formally and create Lightwood as a warehousing and storage Company.

A 30,000 sq ft ex-aircraft hangar was available as a warehouse at historic North Weald Airfield – home to Hurricane squadrons during the Battle of Britain. This building had huge benefits over many more modern constructions – large doors, high eaves height, clear spans, exceptional yard space and great access from the M11, M25 and A12 major trunk roads.

Following the formative years, services were expanded with the addition of a specialised commercial packing and casing arm. Thereafter followed packing of personal effects for overseas which seemed to lead naturally to shipping them as well. From that it made sense to ship commercial cargo too and a small forwarding department was born.

Almost immediately we realised we needed to run our own vehicles if we were to be able to guarantee delivery commitments and a transport department was born. Being relatively small and flexible it was fairly simple to adapt to new suggestions and ideas. We were already providing storage facilities for a trader in essential oils and when they needed additional services, cleaning, weighing, neutralising, decanting etc. we were quick to respond. This led to further growth and other interested customers in similar lines. More flexibility was called for with the ability to handle hazardous by road cargo, so our small fleet was upgraded and staff appropriately trained.

Another crossroads came when the original warehouse became too small and further premises were leased. This enabled us to take on a wider range of services, such as Pick and Pack, stockholding and distribution.

European services were an element missing from our range and this gap was plugged when we took on very experienced operators whom we had dealt with in the past. This creation was very successful and is currently the fastest growing element of our current operations.
